A Great Deal Of Information And A Workaround:

Good Afternoon Maya,

In regards to your Question on how to set the Default Font Size on a Client, I can see it is documented in Technote 1243610 - "Is it possible to alter the font size in Notes views, Calendar entries or mail messages?", which I have included a link to below:

Lotus Software Knowledge Base Document

Title: Is it possible to alter the font size in Notes views, Calendar entries or mail messages?
Doc #: 1243610
URL: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=899&uid=swg21243610
#######################################################################

As the Technote states "An enhancement request, to allow the end user to be able to better control the default fonts and sizes in the Notes client, has been submitted to Quality Engineering as SPR# DCOE5LBMWE, There are no current plans to address this request.". However, I did further research and found Technote 1096030 - "Can you change the default font for only new memos under User Preferences?" (which I have included a Forwarded Copy of at the end of this post) and it's associated SPR#: SWYO55L5V8 - "Customer would like to change the default font for new memo only and made the change permanent". As this Technote states, "If necessary, you can change and set the font permanently for new memos by changing the Text Properties of the Body field in the Memo form design. Note that, however, this would involve modifying the Memo form in the mail template. You can set the font size, color and type/style, as well as the default font for new memos. Existing documents using the memo form are not affected." So, you will have to Open this User's Mail Database via Domino Designer and make the customization. Unfortunately, Customizations to the Mail Template are technically "Not Supported", this can rather easily be done.

I'm not an expert with Designer, so I recommend you Test this on a Test Database before you do it on the User's Mail File. However, I believe I have outlined the steps to make the modification you would like below. I have included a Screen Shot to correlate to the each Numbered Step:

1) Open the Database in Domino Designer and Select "Forms"

2) Select "Memo"

3) Scroll Down and select "Body"

4) Select the Font Tab "a"

5) Select the Desired Font Size and save the changes.

5a) NOTE: You can change the Font, Style, and Color here if you would like as well. Also, these changes will only affect New Memos and not existing messages.

I hope that you find this information helpful Maya; please do not hesitate to Reply to this post if you have any questions regarding the information included above or below and I will respond as soon as I can - I am more than happy to further elaborate on anything that may be unclear! I tend to check back in the Forums often.

Regards,
-Bob

Can you change the default font for only new memos under User Preferences?

 Product:

Lotus Notes > Mail > Version 8.0, 7.0, 6.5, 6.0

 Platform(s):

Mac OS, Windows

 Doc Number:

1096030

 Date:

 Problem
You would like to be able to change the default font for new memos only. However, font changes made through User Preferences (Basics -> Default Fonts) affects all of Notes, not just new memos.

 Content
An enhancement request for this new functionality was submitted to Quality Engineering as SPR# SWYO55L5V8; however, there are no plans to change the functionality.

Workaround #1: Modifying the Memo form design
If necessary, you can change and set the font permanently for new memos by changing the Text Properties of the Body field in the Memo form design. Note that, however, this would involve modifying the Memo form in the mail template. You can set the font size, color and type/style, as well as the default font for new memos. Existing documents using the memo form are not affected.

For related information, refer to the document titled "Changing Fonts by via User Preferences in Notes 5.x Does not Work as Expected" (Technote #1098331).

Workaround #2: Import a signature file with the desired font
The benefit of this workaround is that you do not have to maintain multiple version of mail templates:

1) Prepare signature file for this user with desired fonts/size and save as filtered HTML ( .hmt extension).

2) Open Notes client, select Tools -> Preferences ->> "Signature" Tab ->>> Select "HTML or Image" to select the signature html file that is kept on his/her desktop.

3) Upon create new memo or Reply/Reply with history/Forward, Notes will import this file into message body.

Then user can start compose message from second line (e.g., size 14 or larger). As additional blank lines (default Sans Serif, size 10) is created during import.

Workaround #3: Change the Desktop display settings
On Windows operating systems, by changing Desktop display properties > Settings tab -> Advanced button ->> General tab ->>> Change the DPI setting from "Normal size (96 DPI)" to "Large Font (120 DPI)" or higher setting. You may have to restart the operating system.

For related information, refer to the following document: DWA: Dialog Boxes Do not Display Properly with Large Fonts OS Setting (120 dpi) (Technote #1195474)Database 'Lotus INTERNAL Knowledge Base', View '1. Search View', Document 'DWA: Dialog Boxes Do not Display Properly with Large Fonts OS Setting (120 dpi)'

Workaround #4: Use ini variable to adjust font sizes in Lotus Notes
For Notes 8 user, add "Display_Font_adjustment=<value> " and restart Notes to change the display Font size.

Example: Display_Font_Adjustment=2 or 3 for 1280 x 1024 pixels

In prior Notes releases, increased the font size of the client UI and the Display Properties were ignored, refer to technote #1299090 - Font size of Notes Standard client UI greatly increases after upgrade.
